Acupuncture is a medical technique developed in China thousands of years ago. It is one of the most commonly used medical techniques in the world. Even though it has only recently become popular in America, the FDA estimated that nearly 500 million dollars was spent on acupuncture in 1993. That statistic has been steadily increasing over the years.
Acupuncture is largely based on the principle of Qi (chi). A simple way of understanding qi is to compare it to a river. Much like a river feeds the surrounding land, Qi is responsible for nourishing the body and providing the necessary energy to complete both automated functions and daily activities. When a river runs dry or floods, the land is no longer able to maintain balance. When Qi is not balanced, disease occurs.
Acupuncture focuses on correcting these imbalances by inserting thin needles into specific points on the body. These points follow along 12 main channels or meridians, named for different organs of the body. Each point has a different function, and produces different results for the body. When performed by a Board Certified Acupuncture Physician, the technique is extremely safe and effective.
According to the World Health Organization, acupuncture is effective in treating over 100 conditions. Some common conditions include pain, respiratory disorders, menstrual irregularities, infertility, arthritis, and even wrinkle reduction and weight loss.
By focusing on the body as a whole and recognizing that each symptom relates to others, we are able to treat multiple complaints with each treatment session. We focus on treating the cause of the problem rather than just the symptoms. By bringing the body into proper balance disease can be reversed as well as prevented.
