Several studies have demonstrated the efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of addiction. Each study has confirmed the benefits of NADA Protocol in the treatment of various forms of addiction. We have selected two such cases to highlight.

1.  Dr. Arthur Margolin is a psychiatric researcher at Yale University School of Medicine. He and his team studied the affects of acupuncture on cocaine addiction. The results were published in Archives of Internal Medicine and are astounding.

The study consisted of 82 adult patients who were addicted to cocaine as well as heroin. Each patient received methadone for the heroin addiction, and no medication for the cocaine addiction.

Participants were split into three groups. Group one received auricular acupuncture following the NADA Protocol. Group two received what is called “sham acupuncture” in locations on the ear that are not linked to treatment of any disorder. Group three did not receive any acupuncture; rather being led in a variety of relaxation techniques.

The results speak for themselves. Each subject was tested for the presence of cocaine during the last week of treatment. Group one had 45.2% of participants test positive, Group two had 76.5% of participants test positive, and Group three had an astounding 90.9% test positive.

Alan Leshner, director of the National Institute of Drug Abuse, stated "This is not a definitive study, but it is a well done clinical trial that says acupuncture is a treatment approach that ought to be considered seriously."

2.  A study published in the Journal of Urban Health was conducted in Vancouver, British Columbia. Trained practitioners treated patients for alcohol, heroine, and cocaine addiction utilizing the NADA protocol. In total, 261 patients participated in the volunteer study.

The patients who attended regularly all noticed a significant reduction in withdrawal symptoms. In fact, not only did they experience a decrease in drug cravings, but also noticed decrease in depression, anxiety, insomnia, and suicidal thoughts. The patients also reported a significant decrease in drug use.
