Allergies, sometimes called Hay Fever, are the direct result of a hypersensitivity reaction of our immune systems. Our bodies react to “allergens” such as dust, mold, animal dandruff, pollen, and chemicals.
Western medicine generally treats allergies with antihistamines. Unfortunately, they cause side effects such as insomnia, dizziness, fatigue and dryness. These medications also only treat the manifestation of the allergies, not the cause.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views allergies as a deficiency of Qi or Vital Energy. We treat the cause of the allergy (the qi deficiency) as well as the manifestation (sneezing, runny nose…). By treating allergies when they are not creating a problem, we are able to “tonify qi” and treat the root of the problem. During allergy season, when symptoms are present, our focus becomes treating the manifestation or branch.
Once a diagnosis is made, we utilize a combination of approaches and develop a unique treatment plan for each patient. Often, a treatment plan involves acupuncture, herbs, dietary changes, and sometimes cupping.
Allergy magazine published a study in 2004 demonstrating the efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of allergies. 52 patients were divided into two groups. Group one received weekly acupuncture for six weeks, and took an herbal formula designed to treat allergies. Group two received “sham acupuncture” treatments weekly for six weeks, and took a non-specific herbal formula.
The results of the study indicated that those who received specific acupuncture treatments and herbal formulas noticed improvements in allergy symptoms as well as an increase in energy and ability to participate in physical activity.
