Arthritis

Arthritis currently affects approximately 70 million Americans. Two types are prevalent in adults, Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) affects around 27 million Americans, and is the result of a breakdown of the cartilage in joints. As this protective barrier deteriorates, the bones begin to rub together causing pain, stiffness, and decreased movement. Although the disease may begin as early as 20 years old, symptoms do not usually become noticeable until after 40. Typically, only certain joints are affected, including: hips, hands, knees, neck, and low back. The risk of Osteoarthritis is increased by:
•    Injury of a joint or multiple joints
•    Obesity
•    Overuse of joints
•    Lack of exercise or physical activity
•    Injury to nerves
•    Aging
•    Heredity

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) affects around 1.3 million Americans, and is characterized by an inflammation of the joint lining. This type of arthritis is chronic, and patients fluctuate between flare ups and remission of symptoms. RA occurs in three stages.
1.    Swelling of the joint lining – pain, stiffness, redness, swelling, and warmth around the joint
2.    Rapid division and growth of cells causing a thickening of the fluid that protects the joint
3.    Enzymes are released that digest the bone and cartilage and cause the joint to lose shape – increased pain, decreased movement

Acupuncture can help. Studies have shown that acupuncture is an effective form of treatment for all types of arthritis. A study completed by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) examined 570 people with osteoarthritis in the knee. Participants were divided into three groups. 190 patients received specific acupuncture based on Traditional Chinese Medicine theories, 191 patients received “sham acupuncture”, and 189 patients did not receive any acupuncture. All of the participants continued their current treatments.

The study lasted for 6 months, and participants were evaluated at various intervals. At the eighth week, the acupuncture group was already achieving better results than either other group. By the end of the study, the acupuncture group achieved a 40% decrease in pain, and noticed a 40% improvement in agility and function of the knee.
