Digestive Disorders

There are a number of digestive disorders that can we can address with acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.  The specific techniques utilized vary based on the individual and the condition. Some of the disorders commonly treated are listed below.

Constipation is defined as the passage of small amounts of hard, dry bowel movements, usually fewer than three times a week.

This often occurs when the colon is not contracting properly or is absorbing too much water. Common causes of constipation include:

•        Lack of dietary fiber or fluids
•        Not enough exercise
•        Various medications
Digestive Issues
•        Long-term use of laxatives
•        Problems with the colon, rectum, or intestines

Irritable Bowel Syndrome
(IBS) is a condition where spasms in the colon affect bowel
movements. This leads to diarrhea, constipation, abdominal cramping, gas and
bloating. Some triggers include:

•        Stress
•        Diet
•        Emotions
•        Hormone levels
•        Medications

Diarrhea is when a person gets loose and watery stools more than three times
in a day. Typically lasting only a day or two, if prolonged can cause serious
problems such as dehydration. Diarrhea is commonly caused by:

•        Bacterial or viral infections
•        Food intolerance
•        Parasites
•        Medications

Indigestion/Upset Stomach
is a feeling of discomfort or burning in the upper abdomen. People often experience nausea,
abdominal bloating and belching at the same time. This term is often used for heartburn as well.  Indigestion is often related to:

•        Hiatal Hernia
•        Diet & Eating Habits
•        Stress
•        Pregnancy

These are just some of the conditions we can address these issues through a combination of acupuncture, Chinese herbs, dietary
changes, and exercise. Acupuncture works to:

•        Lower gastric acid
•        Balance the functions of the digestive organs
•        Promote healthy fluid levels in the body
