Lack of sleep is annoying and often difficult to deal with, and can impact daily life. More importantly, serious health risks are associated with improper rest.
People that get less than six hours of sleep on a regular basis tend to be heavier, and have more difficulty losing weight. Lack of sleep has also been linked to Type 2 Diabetes.
The cardiovascular system is also affected by lack of sleep. Risk of hypertension and stroke are directly correlated with improper rest. Women have a greater risk of developing coronary heart disease without adequate sleep.
Mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, and mental distress are associated with lack of sleep. To top it off, sleeping less than 5 hours a night decreases you life expectancy.
Why are people having such a hard time sleeping? Medications, stress, hormonal imbalances, and some diseases can make it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep.
Acupuncture has been proven to benefit sleep quality. One study examined the efficacy of both acupuncture and herbal remedies for 276 patients suffering from insomnia. Participants were evaluated utilizing a multi-channel sleep detector. After three weeks, both groups experienced an improved quality of sleep.Another study examined patients suffering from insomnia with several participants also experiencing emotional disorders. A total of 55 patients were involved in the study. Results were categorized into three sections. Standard 1 – remarkable result – patients achieved normal sleep and an improved emotional condition within 1-3 treatments. Standard 2 – effective result – patients achieved improved sleep within 4-10 sessions. Standard 3 – no improvement – patients did not see noticeable improvement after 10 acupuncture sessions. A total of 83.64% (46) patients achieved “remarkable results” and 12.73% (7) achieved “effective results.” After only one treatment 67.27% noticed positive results.
